In recent years, skincare has seen a notable shift in its demographic, with teenagers actively becoming more interested in skincare. The rise of social media platforms, especially the likes of TikTok, has played a significant role in influencing this trend. As more and more teenagers turn to TikTok for skincare tips and product reviews, quickly purchasing, serums, acids and retinols. The question arises: Should teenagers be using skincare products laced with active ingredients, and if so, what are the safest and most suitable options for them?

With the misinformation circulating on social media, it's crucial to decide what skincare products are safe and beneficial for teenagers. While active ingredients like salicylic acid can help combat acne, and hyaluronic acid can hydrate the skin, the key lies in moderation and suitability. Teenagers should stay clear of over exfoliating their skin with the likes of AHA's and retinol, as this can lead to an impaired skin barrier causing irritation, inflammation and increased cell turnover. Which for teens there skin is already doing that for them. Hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid, so this is suitable for teens to use.

So, how can teenagers establish a skincare routine that balances efficacy and gentleness? Start with avoiding Retinol, Vitamin C, Exfoliating acids, and Eye creams. Here is a simple guide to kickstart a skincare regimen tailored for youthful skin:

ree

  • Cleanser : Start with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. No AHAs or BHAs it is not necessary for teens.

  • Moisturizer : While is it not necessary at this age, due to the skin producing enough moisture and it it unlikely they will be experiencing moisture loss. However, if they feel like they need one, a gentle lightweight moisturizer that contain ceramides will work just fine.

  • Sunscreen : Never skip sun protection, while they may only be teenagers this will not only be the best anti ageing product they can use but it will reduce the risk of skin cancer. Choose a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen with at least SPF 30, everyday.

Remember to check the ingredients, a lot of high street brands will include in the label 'gentle' with the product containing active ingredients like AHA's which is very misleading. As we can all be influenced easily, teenagers tend to have a desire for whatever their favorite influencer or friends are using. Most commonly 'Drunk Elephant' and 'The Glow Recipe' These contain a lot of active ingredients which we know is not suitable for them. If they are desperate to get their hands on skincare from this brand here are some recommendations for teens that do not have any major skin concerns.

Drunk Elephant - Jelly Cleanser

Drunk Elephant- Bronzing Glow drops

Glow Recipe- Hyaluronic Cream

Skincare is not a trend and it is important that we use skincare that is tailored to our own specific skin concerns not what our bestfriend or favorite celebrity is using. Everyone's skin is different. If your teenager has skin concerns such as acne, with the price point of these brands it is best to get professional grade skincare.

Seeking about a skin specialist early on will help get their skin condition under control. There will not be many treatments available if they are under 18, however the correct ski care and advice from a qualified Aesthetician will certainly aid their skin more than TikTok.

The surge of teenagers incorporating skincare into their daily routines is a positive stride towards skin health awareness. By educating themselves with knowledge about suitable products and establishing a gentle skincare regimen, teenagers can navigate the world of skincare confidently and responsibly. Remember, skincare is about self-care and self-love, no matter your age.

So, next time you scroll through TikTok and stumble upon a skincare video, remember what might work for that person may not work for you.
